ABOUT US

What is Probus?

Probus is an acronym for Pro(fessional) and Bus(iness) reflecting the organization’s initial objectives. There are 4,000 clubs worldwide, some 250 being Canadian clubs made up of over 35,000 members. Each Probus club is autonomous but is coordinated through Probus Canada.

Clubs in Canada are social in nature. Our goal at Probus Etobicoke is to provide fellowship, friendship and enjoyment for people in their retirement and semi-retirement years. We want our members to be active, connected and engaged.

We thrive through the participation of our members. We welcome new ideas and encourage members to start new Interest Groups and/or get involved in our Management Committee.

Participation is voluntary. Members are welcome to attend our monthly meetings featuring guest speakers, a social time and a Management Committee update on club events, they can join a wide range of group activities and can attend special events.

The organization is non-political, non-sectarian, non-profit making and non-fundraising. Speakers and operating costs are covered by our annual membership dues.

Probus Etobicoke:

The origin of our club goes back to March 2003 when members of the Probus Club of Mississauga Centre, met with two other members of that club to discuss starting a club in Etobicoke. At that start-up meeting thirty-eight people signed up as charter members and an executive was chosen. In short order, we grew to our current club complement of 315 members.

General Meetings: We meet monthly at the Markland Wood Golf Club in the morning on the 3rd Thursday of the month, unless advised otherwise. Click here for more information.
Activities: Activity groups are established and hosted by a member(s). Where and how often they meet is determined by the group.
Special Events: One-off events are offered throughout the year in our local community and farther afield (note: some events are restricted in number and additional fees may be charged for special events and group activities).
Membership: of the club is limited to 315 members and we currently have a waiting list. Membership renewals occur on September 30 of each year. You must apply to become a member and there is a $25.00 fee to remain on the waiting list. The annual membership fee is $95.00. Prospective members can contact our Membership Director to discuss attending a monthly meeting for a one-time fee of $11.00 (this is popular and in fact many prospective members "try-us-on-for-size" before joining).
Waiting List: In the normal course, the application to join our waiting list is opened up to potential members on November 1st. When our waiting list is full the application will be taken down until such time as room is available. Note: Waiting List Members are encouraged to participate in as many events as they are interested in, but priority does go to our full Members.
